C.S. Lewis once wrote about a principle he called "rats in the basement."
He said, If I go down to the basement and suddenly turn on the lights, and see the rats, turning on the lights did not create the rats. In the same way, the suddenness of the provocation does not make me an ill-tempered man; it only shows me what an ill-tempered man I am.
